Pesticide Tolerance for Dried Brewer's Yeast
Does anyone know what the pesticide maximum residue limits are for dried brewer’s yeast in the US? Brewer’s yeast is the leftover yeast from beer fermentation/production that is separated and dried. Although separated from the beer/barley, there can be residual pesticides from the barley present in the dried yeast. Since EPA pesticide limits are based on agricultural crops, I'm couldn't find any limits for yeast. I did find the FDA has yeast on their pesticide import alert 99-08, so there should be limits for yeast. Would barley be the agricultural crop used to determine what pesticides are allowed in dried brewer’s yeast? Unfortunately for you, the answer is no, the limits are NOT the raw crop limits and they may have been elevated to higher limits during the process i.e. any bromide left in the kettle has not disappeared just because it's not in the beer.......it's now all in the byproduct aka brewers yeast
