ISO 22000:2018 V5.1 - Risk and Opportunities

Good Day Food Safety Family. I am currently preparing for ISO 22000:2018 V5.1 audit in a months time

My area of concern is on section 4.1 Understanding the organisation and its context - in this section I have used the SWOT analysis . S - strength, W - weakness, O - opportunity, T - Threat. We have identified Internally our strength, weakness, opportunity and threats - what I want to know if I need to create an action plan from this assessment.  How ever we have also discussed issues at our recent management review meeting and made changes.  Is this [action plan]  sufficient ?- I do not want to get a finding on this as in the last V5 audit this was already a finding.

My other concern is on 6.1 Risk and Opportunity. Using the SWOT analysis we have identified Risk and Opportunities (Internal / External) do we require an action plan from this assessment again ?.

I look forward to your views and assistance in this regards, Kind Regards. Stay safe

Hi Kelpack,

We have just completed Version 5 audit. The main finding was when defining context of the organisation you must address all the issues noted in the Note in Section 4.1. This states:

Understanding the context can be facilitated by considering external and internal issues, including, but not limited to, legal, technological, competitive, market, cultural, social and economic environments, cybersecurity and food fraud, food defence and intentional contamination, knowledge and performance of the organization, whether international, national, regional or local.

Even if you consider something like food defence addressed elsewhere in your system you still must document considering it when defining context of the organisation (SWOT in your case).

For risks and opportunities I would suggest some sort of assessment to determine whether or not you need to mitigate against risk or pursue opportunity in which case yes you need to document the actions that will be taken.

I used some of the resources in the below link. they are designed for ISO 9001 but are a good guide:
