SQF/FDA guidance on Shared Storage, renting out space
Good Morning, due to COVID-19 our company has downsized and we are looking into possibly renting out a portion of our storage and distribution facility's floor space to another company since we are only using a portion of the building at this time. Is anyone aware of any SQF/FDA guidance on this? I cannot find anything on SQF. I found a few similar topics on the IFSQN but no specific SQF/FDA references were made. Thank you very much for your time and any help would be greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Chris
Would this new company be conducting any processing operations or strictly storage and distribution?
Strictly storage and distribution. Everything at that location currently is finished goods in cold storage awaiting distribution.
Then renting out space is very much possible. It's absolutely fair game.
Your SQF program may require some adjustments, such as increased allergen management, storage practices, risk assessments, etc.
It would be wise to change the scope of the audit limited to the floor space occupied by your Company's operations.
You wouldn't want the other company's operations to hurt your score.
Conduct a risk analysis of their operation. Supplies and processes.
Establish the GMPs they need to live into.
Establish adequate separation.
Communicate and build into the rental agreement these protocols.
Inspect closely early on and monitor ongoing.
Don't wait to call them to task if something is missing at first.
Good luck to you.
