SQF Food Defense Challenge
Hi all, we have been doing the same food defense challenge for a few years now. What we usually do is have someone who doesn't work at our main facility but works at our other location, come over and see if they are able to enter our facility. We have typically been able to have pretty good results but I am guessing it is probably best to switch up what we are doing for our challenge.
Was wondering if anyone had any ideas or could share some of the challenges you have done? Thank you, Chris
I would go outside your company locations and get a friend to see how far they can penetrate without being stopped and most certainly forensic record everything.
I actually got into a food manufacturer in Los Angeles by not even showing an ID at the "highly" secure gate by simply saving I was with the FDA and then entered thru a dock door with a lab coat on and can of soda in my pocket and a clipboard in my hand.
While a couple of people said hello only one asked me who I was, I said FDA and he said have at it.
I ended up sitting in the presidents office after breaching production, the lab, maintenance, general offices and was even able to sit my head in the security office to ask where the exwcutive bathroom was.
All without anyone asking for an ID.
Best if you give the person free reign as to when they are going to run an attempt and also a get out of jail letter.
In the past we were contracted to run breach exercises and unfortunately most of the clients failed the exercise but most certainly learned from them.

lol. I did this once as well. i was surprised no one stopped me at any point. one person asked me if i worked there while i was grabbing a uniform.
Truck drivers being in restricted "employee only" areas, cleaning ladies out of place, key is training employees to be aware of people that seam out of place and question it...report to manager.
Food Defense also includes inspecting received items for signs of tampering. This year for our challenge I cut the bung seal off a 55-gallon drum of an ingredient, taking care that personnel did not see me. About 30 minutes later the person who unloaded the trailer called the QC Manger about a missing seal, asking if it should be rejected or placed on hold.
we would pull securtity seals from our inbound tankers, if the seal is broken, not attached, or doesnt match the manifest (BOL) we can not accept that load
If you have any secured locations on your premises, example roof access points that are pad locked, unlock them and see if it is reported
We also did mysterious packages, example garbage with questionable items sticking out in secure locations and chemical containers that are prohibited from production areas.
Wow thank you everyone, these are great. I do like the one we have been doing which is where we try to have someone outside of the company see how far they can penetrate our building but I feel like it is time to switch it up since we have done that same one every year since the food defense challenge became mandatory.
We do often get rucks in with seals that need to be matched up against paperwork so maybe we will try that one this year.
