Hello, could a BRC auditor or consultant confirm something for me. We have nesting pigeons away from production areas but still on the site ( i know) but in the smoking shelter they are sitting on branches and making a right mess in there. Its not high traffic area. Most people wont go near it i think. But in my mind its still an issue. If an auditor saw the poop in the smoking shelter would that raise a NCR. Please put my mind at rest lol

I would guess major if a direct hit occurred.

I can't speak for BRC, but I did receive a finding for seagull droppings from SQF. They roosted above a smoke break area and there were droppings where the employees took their smoke breaks. It was a minor (kept me from getting the 100 that year) but she did say if she found evidence of the droppings being tracked in it would have been a major.

Those damned seagulls were a protected species too. Took some ingenuity to get rid of them legally.

Cover the smoking area???   Tarp/tents ??

Yes, it would be an NC.  If you have people anywhere near the area, or if there is the slightest chance of it getting tracked in there is an NC.  There are methods to remove, fix so work with your PCO to resolve.  Usually, with birds, it takes a few different things to shoo them away and keep them away.  Good luck.

Potential for pathogens being tracked into the factory? Depends on what and how you are managing the employees who go out for a smoke. Still in uniform, complete change etc?

Even if they do a complete change they can track contamination at least into a change room and it could spread from there.  I'd raise it as a minor NC.
