Starting up an extruder for straws.  What chemicals do you use to clean out an straw extruder water system that has hard water deposits that are solidified in the lines and also in the water chiller.  Also, can you use a salt-free water softener prior to going into an extruder cooling bath?

I'd have a chat with your chemical provider about suitable options for removal of scale/mineral deposits. I've used a compound containing nitric/phosphoric acids for general descaling (not in extrusion) and found it very effective, but there are things with which nitric acid doesn't play nicely as there is potential to release dangerous fumes and/or corrode some metals and plastics.

This is what we use

Can be used for CIP systems

it CANNOT be mixed with anything containing sodium hypochlorite--we do not use it on the same day, so the full clean is performed at end of week and then the acid circulation and rinse is done on Sunday
