Validate cleaning in cannabis packaging room
Hi all, I work in the cannabis industry and part of our facility is GMP certified. To validate our cleaning/sanitation program we've been collecting ATP swabs and our auditor was satisfied with this. Now we have added a flower packaging room to the scope. This room runs 24/7 and although they clean between strains and SKUs (for example pre-roll joints and bagged flower) this space is literally covered in flower/trim/kief material and not surprisingly our ATP readings are through the roof. I know this space is clean, the team is in PPE, we use professional cleaning chemicals and sanitizers and the space is spotless-- besides the perpetual coating of flower material. How do we validate cleaning in this space? Are ATP swabs still acceptable? Could it be as simple as increasing our ATP swab RLU limit? Can you just do that?! Is there an alternative to ATP swabs for this type of environment?
Always appreciate the help I get here!
Thanks in advance.
the short answer is you cannot, as the room is not clean, how can you be sure you haven't introduce mildew to everything and contaminated it all?
Running 24/7 with multiple strains isn't best practice
There really isn't an alternative to ATP
Think of it this way, if you were making cookies and peanut butter powder was an ingredient, you couldn't safely just clean the mixer and not the rest of the room
The only thing you could do, as you say, is adjust your pass/fail RLU, but you probably want to add some TPC swabs to the mix because you're going to have to justify this decision
You mentioned PPE, but you didn't mention basic handwashing.
It sounds like the HVAC system is under sized, the room should not be coated in flower
