Metal Detection in potato washing

Hi

Thoughts please and reasons why!

I am looking at removing our metal detectors as they are currently a CCP in our potato washing and packing and only using it in circumstances where we think we have an issue.

Internally we have had some good finds of stones, yeh stones and nails embedded in the product so the risk of injury is very small as the product gets peeled so yes we may get some complaints but food safety is pretty low.

WHAT DO YOU THINK

Greetings astro,

As with everything the result derives from a hazard analysis. My opinion though is don't remove it, just modify the frequency accodring to your risk assessment.

Reason is you never know, especially since new trends shown and done wrongly through social media from ignorant people and followed by even more ignorant people (like vegan -not against it, just the way some people show it should be done- or a turn to more "natural" food and many many other stupid examples).

I already know of people who eat peeled potatoes like apple, cause "it is as natural and healthy as it gets" (and that's when you might miss a nail that has gone further in)..... And I have at least 20 examples in the past few months that I know of from our local hospital of people just stopping by fields and eating things from "mother nature itself", ending up with swallowing something it wasn't supposed to or poisoning.

Point is internet explosion has made people more aware and informed but the downside is the aforementioned stupid trends from time to time, hence my belief that you should always stay vigilant, at least to some degree. And consider a parent, from the above categories, giving his kid a product that has a nail in it. Then it won't be just a complaint!

Regards!
