Use of commercial processing aid in manufacturing

Hi Everyone,

Our company is SQF certified and we make RTE snacks. I am hoping to get some guidance on use of commercial cooking spray as a processing aid. We had an urgent requirement for processing aid as our suppliers are having long delays with their shipments. Due to the nature of our product we need processing aid for production so our production manager purchased commercial cooking spray from a big retailer. We reached out to the retailer for documentation however were told that they cannot provide any documents other than the SDS. We were not able to get lot specific COAs, which is a requirement of our supplier approval program. What are the considerations for using a commercial ingredient?

Hello APK.

What are the considerations for using a commercial ingredient?

The answer to this might change a bit depending on which FS or QM scheme you operate under. As a general rule you will want to follow your supplier approval program. You might want to open a NC. Possibly close that out with an update your supplier program to cover 'emergency' type possibilities, such as the one it sounds like you've experienced.

What about your emergency supplier program. Can it be approved this way.

Like TimG said - you'll have to look at your scheme and regulations in Canada.

What about info from the actual company producing the item. Could you get the info from them.

as a commercial product, you should be able to reach out to the manufacturer yourself and speak with their QA manager who can get you what you need

google the manufacturer, and call
