SQF 11.2.5.2 - chemicals inventory

Ok peeps

 

I want to know what you think "inventory" means under

11.2.5.2

Detergents and sanitizers shall be suitable for use in a food manufacturing environment, labeled according to regulatory requirements, and purchased in accordance with applicable legislation.

The organization shall ensure:

i. The site maintains a list of chemicals approved for use;

ii. An inventory of all purchased and used chemicals is maintained;

iii. Detergents and sanitizers are stored as outlined in element 11.6.4;

iv. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are provided for all detergents and sanitizers purchased; and v. Only trained staff handle sanitizers and detergents.

 

our auditor asked for lot numbers---which isn't expressly required as per the code--and we didn't receive a minor because we didn't have them which leads me to believe I'm right..............thoughts?

I guess lot numbers would be a good idea.   it may even help with FIFO - if that is a concern.    I have never seen that required either. 

 

Inventory to me = What was received, what was used, and what is still in house.   Then a physical accounting @ "X" frequency.   

agree-----I want to remove this.......zero value 

 

Obvs different if this was a processing aid

The only thing our auditor has ever been checking was the expiry dates of buffer solutions for pH meter (our CCP is product pH) and concentration test kit chemicals. Never lot #s or expiry dates of cleaning/sanitizing chemicals.

so I had to wade through 7 years of documentation (not an easy task when predecessors thinking was all over the map), it was originally used for processing aids, which makes sense, which morphed into EVERY chemical we have onsite

Question along these lines - Has anyone had an SQF inspector asl if you can identify what lot code of a chemical, CIP cleaner for example, you were using on a particular day?

 

This line of thinking got me wondering.  We've always maintained a log on receiving on cleaning chemicals and when they were received.  At my last job we recorded lot numbers received too.  But we did not record an ongoing log of what lot number was used on what day.

I don't see why it's needed if there's no SQF code requirement of that?
