Hello All,

I am wondering if anyone has a template for a risk assessment that is modified by another risk assessment. I think of weighted or parent-child type assessment. Any information would be appreciated.

Regards,

Jay

Hi Jay,

Is this a food-related query ?

I have never seen "doubled" RAs of the type you mention in a FS context.

Yes, it is a food-related question. I could have worded it better. I am writing an Approved Supplier Policy to satisfy the SQF Code. We have a few suppliers, that I find to be "Good" suppliers (short supply chains, responsive, etc.). However, we source quite a few raw materials form them. I am trying to build a risk assessment template that gives priority to the supplier, as they mitigate some of the risk to the raw materials, but also accounts for the risk of the actual raw material as some do carry inherent risks.

If you can qualify the criteria you're using to call them "good", and somehow quantify that information through supplier questionnaires or internal assessment, you could define some type of "preferred supplier" status in your policy and list them that way.  One example from my side of a business would be purchasing vegetables directly from a farm with a GFSI packaging operation versus purchasing from a broker.  Both can be acceptable, but if our business wanted to use the farm as a first option for freshness, we could define them as the preferred option through policy.

Hi Jay,

So the SQF Food Safety Code requirements are outlined in 2.3.4 Approved Supplier Program (Mandatory)

2.3.4.2 The approved supplier program shall be based on the past performance of a supplier and the risk level of the raw materials, ingredients, processing aids, packaging, and services supplied, and shall contain at a minimum:

i. Agreed specifications (refer to 2.3.2);

ii. Reference to the level of risk applied to raw materials, ingredients, packaging, and services from the approved supplier;

iii. A summary of the food safety controls implemented by the approved supplier;

iv. Methods for granting approved supplier status;

v. Methods and frequency of monitoring approved suppliers;

vi. Details of the certificates of conformance, if required; and

vii. Methods and frequency of reviewing approved supplier performance and status.

Your risk assessment will be dependent on the risk associated with the material supplied but you can add to this with an assessment of the supplier to confirm methods and frequency of monitoring including:

- Risk of material

- Historical evidence of the supplier and raw material

- Geographic origins of the product

- Other known risks associated with the material such as potential substitution

In this way established suppliers with a good supply history of good quality materials from locations regarded as lower risk, are subject to less stringent approval methods and monitored less frequently.

Kind regards,

Tony
