Glass Door for Production Mgr's office

Hello All,

 

We are wanting to install a door with a one-way mirror connecting the production room and the production manager's office. Does it need to be a specific kind of glass that goes above and beyond the glass that usually comes on the doors that one would buy at a hardware store?

Yes, you should have the same glass as vehicles do installed-----that way you won't loose pieces when it does get hit (and it will)

What Scampi said...should be shatterproof or have some sort of film on it that makes it shatter proof.  Do a quick google search and you should be able to find something.

First, I would not recommend a one way glass door - and yes, I have seen lots of accidents with these as the doors need to swing inward from production and the person pushing from the outside will not know who or what is on the other side.

With that said and if you decide to do it anyway find a door company that specializes (not a run of the mill hardware chain) in one way laminates as the one way surface must be 'glued" (actually a molten glass bead is used) to one exterior shatterproof glass piece and floats without adhesion to the front shatterproof layer.

It's unlike the type used on automobiles amd trucks - completely different and van be rather expensive.

If it was my office I'd punch a hole in the wall and using standard onw way mylar film have that adhere to a backing of plexi and install another shatterproof piece in front of it.

We picked up a lot of experience with one way tech while in the hotel inspection field.

I've had facilities pass SQF audits with regular glass in doors leading to production by covering the glass on both sides with clear contact paper (or other similar film).  To help prove to auditors that there was indeed film on the glass, I put small colored circle stickers on the windows before applying the film, and the auditor can feel that the film is atop the sticker with their finger nail.  I made sure the doors are on the glass and brittle plastic registers afterward, and never had an auditor have a problem with it.

 

If you have the money for more elegant solutions, you can go for it.  But just make sure you can prove any of the fancy solutions you end up with.  Keeping a receipt for that expensive glass window for all future audits could be annoying.
