Do rack pins need adding to monthly housekeeping audits?

Hi All

Just did a factory walkabout and following a Health and Safety Audit our Maintenance Guys have put rack pins in the storage racks.  these are L shaped pins that bend into the rack.

I am guessing i should count these and add them to the monthly housekeeping Audit.  Has anyone put a checking system in place for this type of possible contamination?

would very much appreciate any advice on this.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings Norma,

I believe you mean contamination regarding food safety, right?. Rack pins are usually smoothed out at the tip, so there is little danger that they may tear the packaging material if they are not well placed and stand out. This goes for both raw material and end product storage.

If the storage you mention though is for raw material and you happen to have open packaging then you should at least do a planned integrity check according to your registry or better yet have a metal detector.

If you have a metal detector or if it is in the end product storage then, in my opinion, there is no need for an increase in inspections, other than the typical for integrity checks and maintenance reasons. You can just register them like bolts or other connectors you may use.

Regards.

Thanks so much Evans for your reply.  It is very helpful.  Yes I think so I will register them and add them to the regular checks.

Very much appreciated!

Kind regards

Those rack pins have a habit of disappearing, since they are only held in by gravity and friction. You may find auditing them monthly to be more of a task than you expect.
