Wearing hairnet when working with exposed samples?

Hello, would you be in agreement with me that the following from SQF includes samples, meaning anyone doing laboratory testing needs to wear a hairnet, too?:

  • SQF Code 11.4.1.2 / 17.4.1.2   Personnel working in or visiting product handling or processing operations shall ensure that:
  • v. Hair restraints and beard covers, where applicable, are used in areas where product is exposed;

Please comment on similar requirements in GMP as well.

(Good Manufacturing Practices has a similar requirement.  However, because these do not mention samples specifically, we seem to have fallen into what I see as bad habits regarding hair nets and I want confirmation before I move forward.)

We are manufacturing dietary supplements in the United States and follow 21 CFR Parts 111 and 117, SQF, and NSF GMP.

Thank you,
Matthew

Considering that we are forming a distribution company with retail outlets that buys from dietary supplement manufacturers we find the following to apply to LAB personnel --- "where applicable."

And in the lab, hair nets are certainly applicable, in fact in an upcoming inspection at a potential supplier if I witnessed any lab personnel not wearing a hair net that would be reason enough to not be their customer for our 77 locations.

It is not a good precedent to have differing sets of rules. If your people need to wear hairnets when working with the product from your facility, so should your lab people.

Wear the hairnet!

I think it depends on if the exposed product will be disposed of. If it is a sample that will immediately be disposed of I don't think its necessary. If it is product that will be saleable then absolutely hairnets should be worn.

It will not be disposed of immediately nor saleable; it is a retention sample that could be tested at a later time.

I'd say wear the hairnets for handling samples.  Lax protocol here would eventually lead to sample pullers working with the finished material without hairnets when they pull the samples, plus any contamination into your retains is a huge cause for concern.
