Hello,
grates above the product are problematic from view of safety and hygiene.
In the past it was standard to use grates for ways on the second or higher floors of machines.
Walking there could be a problem in case of dirt and pieces falling down into the product or on employees.
Who knows a solution which does not affect the operativness of an installed sprinkler equipment?

Is your machine something like this?
I don't know the precise answer to your question Michael but changing the flooring sounds like a pretty expensive solution. I think you have to ask what are the hazards and risks that present themselves and how well do you have them under control, for instance:
- Are the machines covered by an effective cleaning plan
- Is the use of loose parts, tools, consumables, oils, greases under control
- Is there an engineering safe hand-over procedure following maintenance or make ready
- Are operators trained to understand their role in preventing contamination
Obviously the above is not an exhaustive list and your HACCP / hazard analysis should help you to identify Your main risks..
Subject to the above the most significant risk is maybe from the operators themselves and in partcular dirt and debris from the soles of their shoes. A potential solution is to have ‘sticky mats' positioned at stragegic points, possibly the top of stairs is a good place. These sticky mats are used in clean room environments and are so tacky they almost pull your shoes off, well no quite but they are very effective at removing dirt, dust and debris from the soles of shoes.
Each day or when you need to (when auditors /customers are coming around - No very naughty please ignore that) you simply peel off the dirty unsticky mat to reveal another clean and super sticky mat underneath.

yes you are right. I think our machines are comparable to the machine on the picture.
We have printing, extrusion and lamination lines.
