Product testing during release as a CCP

Hi all
Can a product release step be a CCP if we test each batch of the product for determining hazards within acceptable level, if not we reject the batch?

I don't think so.   What's your product?
 

What are you testing for? 

Technically could this be considered a CCP? My understanding was that CCPs are steps designed to actually reduce a risk. Testing will make you aware of whether a product meet spec, but it does nothing to actually reduce the risk that is present in the product. Product testing helps to verify that the product is ready for release, but the heat treatment applied to the product (for example) is what actually reduces risk. In this example the time/temperature of the treatment is the CCP, not the product testing. Of course, product must not be released until it has met all specifications, but technically speaking the testing might not be considered a CCP in your HACCP plan.

Yes.  You need to have well defined acceptable and un-acceptable objective values.

 

Pretty much anything can be a CCP if you can clearly define objective criteria by which it can be evaluated, and identify the risks it controls or eliminates. 

 

We had a labeling step as the CCP for one group of products -- if it passed a set of tests it was deemed acceptable and got a 'shipping' label.  That was the only CCP in that HACCP plan, and USDA was fine with it for 20+ years.

We actually test different chemical hazard that we cannot control in our process. We are still figuring out how can we control them, but no existing procedure available. So, we are testing final product to determine their level, if they are within acceptable range, then we release the product, if not just reject it. Please don’t ask me more detail. I am just confused if we can call this step as CCP.
