Supplier Approval Criteria for Low-Risk Services
A question regarding supplier approval please :)
What is the minimum requirement for approval of services where things such as HACCP and traceability, wouldn't be applicable? I'm thinking of couriers, cleaning services, engineering parts etc. Would I send the same questionnaire as a high risk but accept an N/A for certain criteria?
The same with low risk suppliers in general - what is that I need ticked which will warrant me approving them?

I had a client once that told me that up until the time I walked in the door the way they approved suppliers was to meet them at the local bar, have a couple beers and then ask the person Yes or No questions and as long as they had 50% of more YES's then they were approved.

- membership of a recognised trade association which specialise in the service provided (e.g pest control)
- historical experience with the supplier
- legal registration (e.g waste licences)
- third party certification to a recognised standard
- evidence of training and competence in food safety
- quality of service provided

"(even if haccp/traceability is not in place for low risk suppliers) " -- I would not use the term "I should be ok" I think with a lack of those items and regardless of whether they are low risk or not that you are putting both feet in hot water.
As my former friend (he passed on some years ago) who owned an apple sauce company once said, look - I never thought somebody could screw up an apple, but they sure did" -- after a gigantic recall on apples and he had failed to require them to have tractability information/program/recall etc because the farming organization was low risk.
We require all suppliers whether high or low risk to provide the exact same thing.
