Forums moving to new domain
During the move the forums will be offline for about 48 hours, but I intend to give at least a couple of days notice.
The reason for the move is twofold; firstly the forums will then be fully integrated with the new website IFSQN.com. Secondly and more importantly Google does not like the fact the forums are wrapped in the skin of the new website (it confuses their algorithm and may be seen as spam or webpage hijack) and since doing this our search engine visibility has dropped markedly. The 20,000 odd forums pages that were listed in Google have been dropped and we no longer show for the thousands of search terms that we used to.
About 80% of new visitors come through Google and right now we're not getting very many at all. People are just not finding us.
Once we move the forums we will begin to reestablish in the search engines. This is a necessary move to get back on track and to grow this great resource.
Regards,
Simon
I would make two comments very vaguely on this topic.
(1) (a) Is the intended current situation to view the forum details that one has to be logged in or not ? I find that for some periods of time I cannot enter without being logged in and other times no restriction. My guess is should be the latter but reality is about 50/50, for me anyway, it's probably my fault again.
(1)(b) What about intended situation to dwl items from the document exchange, no restriction?
(2) Another peculiarity is that the auto-login function almost never works (I have cookies set to keep until they expire, just checked it in respect to the following text). Have no idea if (1) might be related to (2). Had a slight suspicion that my first access of the day might require a specific login to view the forum details but after logging out I am still treated as logged in although the site claims I am logged out, ie any subsequent visits on this day seem to be allowed full access to the forum without logging in again. Never been sufficiently irritated to verify this. This non-logged in facility does not extend to posting - I just tried it !
The observations for above seem same for FF and IE.

I can change permissions for guests 'forums-wide'. Currently guests can view everything, but you're right I did change this a few weeks ago for a couple of weeks. Mainly to get lurkers to register and maybe post. I'm trying all sorts Charles. I can confirm you do not have to be 'logged in' to view the forums at the moment.(1) (a) Is the intended current situation to view the forum details that one has to be logged in or not ? It's the same for me Charles, I always have to 'log in' - although it does remeber my password. Like you say it isn't a major inconvenience, but I will look into it as I would like to know more about cookies. Will revert later.
