Use of peracetic acid as powerful disinfectant

Hi Everyone,

we are seafood processing company and I have been recently offered by our supplier of cleaning chemicals the product based on peracetic acid as powerful disinfectant. As I never used this product before so I did some research on its uses and drawbacks and I found that it is as effective as chlorine and in some cases more effective than chlorine. but it also has some drawbacks like corrosion of stainless steel equipment and it requires more personal safety precautions when using in the processing area.

If some is already using this product, I need your guidance for its safe and effective use, like generally what precautionary measures should be taken by the person who is applying it (mainly housekeeping staff) and what concentrations are effective against microorganisms.

currently we are using chlorine based disinfectant, so I need your advise that should I need to switch to this new disinfectant? my supplier is claiming 7 log reduction

PA / PAA is a very effective sanitizer. It is very common in the usa.   It has alot of advantages over chlorine.  doesnt degrade like chlorine, not as affected by soil levels, etc

Im not sure its any harsher on stainless than chlorine.

the undiluted chemical has a very strong smell.  However its still fairly safe.    perhaps a little more risk to skin and eyes.

paa is usually more expensive.

1 Thank

Our company uses peracetic acid as the final step in our process because it complies with Kosher requirements. To implement a similar system, you can work with chemical suppliers to set up a dispenser tailored to your specific needs. Be sure to use testing strips to verify that the concentration meets the necessary standards

It works great --the #1 draw back is cost

PPE would/should be the same as using a chlorine based chemical for the sanitation staff

thanks everyone for your contributions
