HACCP-PCP for Animal Food and Treats

Hello,

Recently transitioned from human food to the animal food industry. Currently at a dog treat manufacturing facility and trying to update our outdated HACCP plan.

I was wondering if someone could point me a hazard database (similar to Appendix 1 of PCHF) for animals? I did have a look into #245 of the hazard guidance for animal food by FDA, but it only lists down the broad hazard categories and gives random examples, nothing in-depth. I have tried looking into Australian standards for the same as I've heard they have pretty strict controls, but I couldn't find the exact document or publication of the same.

Pet Food Industry folks, I could use all your guidance and expertise here! :)

Thanks in advance!

The University of Minnesota College of Vet Medicine created the "scientific literature database food for animals".   Its an excel doc that works like appendix A.

I cant seem to find a link, except for the "instructions"   https://ngfadev.hurd...e_4_10_2017.pdf

I will attach once I verify there is no copywrite.   Or you could reach out the the people in the instructions listed (page 2) in the instructions for a link/ download.

Thanks so much @kingstudruler1 for the suggestion!! Was not even remotely aware that such a database existed. I did end up finding it on the NGFA webpage - https://www.ngfa.org/feed-fsma-resources-hazard/

Putting the link to their page here in case someone else like me is also looking for it.

Thank you!

Thanks for that link!    I really did look for some time trying to find it for you.  I was afraid it was behind a paywall somewhere.

What type of treats?

We make cookies for dogs. They are pretty much standard human food cookies with reduced sugar.

Our HACCP/Food Safety Plan for dog cookies are no different than the one for human cookies, since our customers (big names in the genre) require that the ingredients used are suitable for human consumption.

Hello Marshall,

Yes, we do have a regular HACCP plan that complies with human grade. But we make feed grade treats as well and the risk profiling for those are completely different since most of our suppliers for the feed grade ingredients are not bound by any of the human food requirements/regulations which kind of opens us up to a plethora of risks not otherwise present in human grade ingredients.

And that makes perfectly good sense.

We do not make "feed grade" treats, so we are somewhat less regulated.
