Requirements for Importing Food from Africa to Canada – Regulations and Compliance

Hello everyone,

I am seeking assistance to gain a comprehensive understanding of the essential requirements for a customer looking to import food products from African countries to Canada, particularly in relation to food safety regulations.

I am aware that they must obtain a (GFSI) license, which ensures that their food safety management systems meet international standards. Additionally, they need to create an account with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for compliance and oversight.

Furthermore, I would like to clarify whether they can sell their products directly to consumers and businesses in Canada or if they must work with a licensed broker or importer to facilitate the process. Could anyone provide insights on additional basic requirements? For instance, are there specific labeling standards, import permits, or documentation needed for various types of food products? Any information on regulations regarding health and safety inspections, as well as customs clearance procedures, would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your assistance!

That is a big topic!

What kinds of foods? Meats and cheeses would have a whole different set of criteria than nuts, beans, or spices.

What condition are you shipping them? Frozen, canned, vacuum packed?

Are they natural foods? Halal, Kosher?

A) NEVER do this kinda importing without a broker (speaking from experience---the price they charge is 100% worth it---I have loads refused because the scanner grabbed a sheet out of order--no joke)

B)  see these links

C) the GFSI is NOT a CFIA requirement

D) the MUST meet Canadian import requirements. Period

As someone who have spent 4 years importing and exporting meat into and out of Canada, MAKE SURE all yours ducks are in a row BEFORE you book a load or you will end up on the hook paying for storage at the border and/or for the product to be destroy

There are ALOT of things to consider, heavy metals, pesticides etc  the rules in other countries are different, and therefore (depending on the product) you'll need much more evidence to prove the product is safe for sale in Canada
