TISI standards for food-contact closures: marking requirements for Thailand

Hello everyone,

We are a supplier of food contact closures and are currently exploring opportunities to extend our business into Thailand. While reviewing the TISI standards, we’ve found some aspects confusing... particularly around marking requirements.

Our closures are composed of multiple components, produced by injection moulding. One point we’d like clarification on is whether it is strictly necessary to include the "safe for food contact" symbol directly on the closure itself. From a practical standpoint, applying this marking to our products presents challenges, so we want to be absolutely certain of the requirement before investing in new processes.

Has anyone here had direct experience with TISI compliance for closures or similar food contact materials in Thailand? Any insights or examples of how companies have addressed this marking requirement would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Here is a link to the clause abstract/explanation: https://a.tisi.go.th/t/?n=2844

Yes. It is a food contact article and under TIS 655, the following is required:

Two marks must be on the plastic article itself (embossed/debossed):
  1. Plastic identification symbol (per TIS 1310) on the container including the lid, if any.
  2. “Safe for food contact” symbol (shape/proportions per Annex) on the container, as a raised or recessed mark.
In practice, for items that are just closures/lids, auditors treat the closure as the “container/lid” component—so the food-safe symbol and the plastic ID must be molded onto the closure itself (space permitting).

Possible solutions, if practical/feasible?
  • Mold the symbol on the closure (top deck underside or inner skirt) to satisfy TIS 655’s “on the container” requirement.
  • If geometry truly prevents it, seek written acceptance from TISI/CB to put the food-safe symbol on the outer pack (carton/polybag) and ensure other TIS 655 requirements are satisfied
