Guidance on Shatterproof Mirror Implementation

Hello,

I am seeking your guidance regarding the installation of a shatterproof mirror outside the production area. The purpose is to allow employees to check that their hairnets and beard nets are properly secured before entering.

Currently, our production employees are permitted to wear earrings, however, they are required to cover them with blue tape to ensure security. I would also like to reinforce the practice of tucking the taped earring area under the hairnet for added protection.

I have found a option, a Plexiglass Acrylic Shatterproof Mirror from Amazon and would like your recommendation on whether this material would be compliant with food safety standards, especially considering our upcoming Primus audit in December.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

Tahreem

I'm more concerned about your employees wearing earrings into the production room then a piece of brittle plastic in a non-production area, but I like the tape and hairnet precautions added over them.  I am not familiar with Canadian requirements.  For SQF and BRCGS, I would include this on the glass and brittle plastic inspections and risk assessment.  Risk to your product would be very very low.  Detection of breakage should be pretty high.  Frequency of formal inspection can be low.  Other than that I think it's common to have some sort of reflective surface to check the PPE placement before entering production.

No don't go for plexiglass, you can get stainless steel mirrors which have zero risk.  There are suppliers in the UK like Teknomek and similar but I'm sure if you google it you can find a local one.  That way it won't get damaged.  Just be aware the shiny side comes with film over the front.  Don't (as I did) ask an engineer to put it up without telling them in advance, for them to put it up film side facing the wall.  D'oh!

I agree with the earrings.  Back in the many decades ago that I've worked in the food industry, this was allowed.  But come on now...  Surely we're past this?  Just take out the flipping piercings or find a job somewhere else.

Polished stainless steel.

Make sure the HR department or whoever doesn't try to use it as a bulletin board and cover it with tape residue too.

Hi Tahreem,

As per previous posts earrings should be prohibited and a stainless-steel mirror is your best option. Example below.

Kind regards,
