Storage distance from wall requirements

Hi Everyone, We are setting up a new facility for food production and found out that a storage room within the warehouse was built slightly smaller than what was planned. This is causing spacing issues for the storage racking. wondering if there are any standards prescribing that storage racking be 18" away from walls? Is 12" acceptable?

18 inches is generally the accepted but with a risk analysis you could head down to very low minimums - all that matters is that cleaning and pest control can be easily completed.

Inside wall or outside wall?

Inside wall or outside wall?

this is for the inside wall

As long as nothing is touching the walls and your PCO can access the traps, you can use what ever measurement works for your facility

18" was the number that was often kicked around when I started, but to my recollection there isn't a strongly published standard for it.  They tend to default to enough space to perform the pest inspections.

In my first job we had a white area 18" wide painted at the base of all interior walls.  A rather plump auditor tried to argue that was insufficient because HE couldn't get halfway down a wall to check a trap.  Literally had to demonstrate we had staff members who could, rather easily, make their way down the wall and check all traps.

The only standard / CB I've known get really sniffy about it was AIB and even they don't have a minimum distance just that there is a "clear unrestricted perimeter".  Even then 18" is (no offence) rather generous for most people and I've normally seen 12" is more than enough.

But most of my pest contractors have been pretty skinny!   :roflmao:
