Raw material risk assessment - where to list turmeric used as a colour?

Hello All!

We may use Turmeric for coloring in one of our products. It may not matter where I place it in the Raw material risk assessment but thought I might as well ask. If its used as a color, would you place it in the coloring section, or on its own? May be simple but I over think everything lol.

thanks

If it's used as a colour, normally as an extract, I'd put it in colour. If it's used as a powdered spice, then I'd put it into spices.

Either way, if it's in its powdered form, make sure you're capturing the risk of illegal dyes or undeclared food dyes. It was notorious a while back for lead chromate adulteration but there are signs some of the fraudsters are switching to other yellow dyes some which are still food safe but would cause a labelling issue but others which may not be food safe. (The more yellow the turmeric, the better the price.)
