Is paint safe in conjunction with food?

Hi,
I am sure one of you can enlighten me regarding the following,
Are there any regulations regarding paints which may be used on conveyors within a fresh produce factory (root vegetables) or will all paints be safe when dry?
Thanks
Darren

Hi Darren,
One question - Is this direct food contact or painting a drive motor or ? More common IMEX to find stainless steel or plastic for conveyor belts but not much familiarity with root vegetables except on the table ?
Rgds / Charles.C
added - if direct, I guess you are in the "approved / food grade paint" area, if otherwise maybe yes, maybe no depending on evaluation of contact possibilities.

Hi Darren, it may be helpful for a better risk assessment if you provide a little more information as Charles asks. Also do the vegetables go directly onto the conveyor and at what part of the process? What happends to the root vegetables are they peeled / washed? Which country are you in?
Thanks,
Simon

Hi,
Thanks for replying and i apologise for not answering sooner. I contacted the manufacturer of the paint and was told that it would be OK when dry, i requested this in writing but am still waiting.
I would still like to know if there are any regulations regarding types of paint and will scour the internet when i get time.
Thanks
Darren

Dear Darren,
I guess regulations will depend on where you are.
Regarding food grade paints, can try these US links -

food-grade paint is your best option however, if still unsure, you can always ask for a certificate from the paint supplier about their product.
Food Grade Paint. It just doesn't sound right. I'll have sirloin steak, medium to well done with sauteed potatoes, fresh vegetables and a gravey boat of yellow paint.
hey, they have food-grade grease too.
