Hi Majed,
You would be wise to avoid glass items in the production area. See Codex. However, if you are in a closed production from process to pack, Simon would be correct to ask you what you are producing and probably how.

Thanks Simon & Charles
We are in the processing of dates (chopped, stuffed and jam/paste), conveyer belts are no covered, some of the machinery is also uncovered and there is manual handling in the process.
What do you suggest ?

Majed

Hi Majed,
If you are referring to glass breakages control, the answer had been given. But if you are asking us about the potential hazards and what shd be the appropriate measures of controls for the process, thats a different story.
Suggest that you go to the pinned section of this segment under "From SaferPak to Certification" - tells us what u thk we shd know and ask us what and how us wnats us to help you.
I assume you do not have a HACCP Plan. If not, tell us what u have done and what you wish to achieve. If the information you wish cannot be made public, you may send them to me directly so that I can help you through for FREE.....

Greetings Majed,
OK to have 1 or 2 doors only open to production area, you may seal others for hygienic reasons, its good for many ways you may control of unauthorized access to other non-production staff and others to watch the process from the glass windows/doors,
Always closed the doors / windows to enter wind blown with dust. Its common in UAE the atmosphere contains little sand and other foreign particles, sand storms are usual sometimes. and to avoid flies as you are dealing with sweet product jam/paste of dates. Hope you have screening process and metal detector at place. Then the process might be OK.
Feel free to ask more,
Abdul Qudoos.
Glass isn't ideal and where possible it should be replaced with an alternative which is not as easily broken. I would suggest this is planned in.
In the meantime, the glass should be audited very frequently to ensure it's not damaged. I would suggest weekly glass audits and prestart up checks every shift.
When you do have to replace this glass, be aware it might create a mess when being replaced so it's probably best to plan in on a shift when you're not producing and can clean afterwards.
One other downside I've experienced is with windows directly onto production areas, they should not be openable (trust me, you don't want to go down the fly screen route, they get minging and if not fitted properly are not 100% effective.) Also it can massively increase the temperature of the room on sunny days which in one plant I worked in overloaded the air conditioning regularly in June, July and August. We were making an ambient product but still, you start to get production issues with product sticking to the belts etc.

IMEX.. we have glass window in production area and to avoid contamination, if glass broken, we laminate the widow with film and we control it once a day.. and we prepare procedure if the glass broken...
