What is becoming more frightening is that the world is set for more industrial standards to emerge in future. Are the current industries so lacking in customer confidence or it is getting to becoming a nuisance.

Will such standards eg ISO 22000 be used as a Technical Barrier to Trade. Codex Discussion Committee often have intense dialogues on such issues. Will HACCP be the single leading food safety standard or would the "hybrid" versions overtake it.

Wright now every company that has contact which food and is in EU must have a HACCP system. I am wondering if ISO 22k will replace the HACCP standards in the Directive nr 93/43/EEC? How do you feel about this? Will ISO 22k become an EU standard?

The similar situation is now in the safety of the machines. If you are a producer or importer you have to verify that your machine is safe. You can do it in some possible ways. But the most common and easy it to examine the machine with the harmonized standards which are in the norms, eg. EN-292 Safety of machinery. Basic concepts, general principles for design. Basic terminology, methodology.

It has already been adopted as a CEN Norm project (EU Standard).

When published, it will be obligatory for EU National Standards bodies to publish it - in the UK it will be published as BS EN ISO 22000: 200*.


But that doesn't mean it is a TBT - in the UK 90% of food businesses are SMEs, FSA has arranged reduced requiremenst for compliance with the EU HACCP regulations for SMEs they aren't going to pick up 22000 because it add more requirements which are linked to ISO 9001.

Other Codes of practoec and guidance may be needed for SMEs - not neccessarily based around certification

Interestingly Codex has dropped its HACCP Cert work in recognition of the succeess and progress in creating ISO 22000 as a global standard - almost a tactit approval of ISO 22000 as a successor to HACCP?

What worries me is that the implications of CODEX's action may not be what it may turn out to be. IMO CODEX would never give any indication that it would openly accept ISO 22K as the new defacto global food safety standard but again uncertainty does have its "strength"

Unless it is globally recognised as the defacto standard and until then, it would have its uphill battle to be one. The fragmented and clearly divided views for food safety standards have indeed created further uncertainties.

I feel that HACCP will eventually emerge as the best food safety management tool ,we cannot term is as a standard.HACCP is most relevant.Interfacing it with other systems will strength the HACCP system.(But any system where HACCP is not as the core will be of no real world use and will be impractical. )There will be more awareness in the manufacturers of food products to ensure food safety and avoid food poisoning or contamination incidences.In many countries of the world the food safety awareness is extremely poor,by globally enforcing HACCP which will be a TBT can be used to the consumers advantage and safety of the people globally.
