Glass & Brittle Plastics

As I am just in the first stages of implementing these procedures, I have taken a check around the production areas of my factory to see what it is I am up against.

I have made a list of all glass and brittle plastics within this area. This has included control panel screens and plastic buttons on machines.

Do I need to go as indepth as this or is it over kill?

I am a packaging company who are looking for Category A accreditation.

Any help or guidance from anyone?

Thanks

Louise

Hi Louise,

It's good that you've logged the glass and brittle plastics in production, but for category ‘A' BRC/IoP there is no requirement for a register of this type. You must have a policy that bans non-production glass and brittle plastics (i.e. the stuff that's not part of machines etc.) and you should minimise production glass and brittle plastics wherever possible. Make sure it's considered when specifying new machinery and equipment.

So you could say its overkill, or you could say that you're being proactive. Perhaps review the completed register and carry out a sensible risk assessment of it. Maybe keep on only the items that present a significant risk. Or keep them all on but change the audit frequency for items of differing risk e.g. high = daily, medium = weekly, low = monthly. On machines try to build the check for intactness into the machine setup or changeover, make it the responsibility of the operator.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Simon
