Hello all, my name is Theo and i am a food technologist specialising in food safety management especially in the catering industry. I have worked 5 years in the food manufacturing industry [instant noodles plant], afterwards i worked 2 years managing 3rd party airline catering contracts for Virgin Nigeria Airways, presently i manage 3rd party offshore catering contracts for Exxon Mobil Nigeria.
My 1st "baptism of fire" into food safety and all the gizmos associated with it was during my time in aviation catering due to the very strict food safety requirements of International Civil Aviation Organisation for all meals served onboard.
I recently completed an online distance learning PgCert in HACCP catering from the International HACCP Centre at the University of salford UK and i hope to carry on the programme up to MSc level.

Hello Theo, Sorry to hear about the problem you had with Ghana yesterday in the ANC. I studied at Salford University (in real life) too. It was back in the 1990’s, the degree subject was quality management and believe it or not one of my best buddies was Nigerian.

I’m interested to know where you heard about the online distance learning PgCert in HACCP catering?

Welcome to the forums Theo, look forward to more of your input.

Regards,
Simon
Hi Simon, its a shame Nigeria lost to Ghana yesterday at the ongoing ANC...it didnt come as a suprise though as the Nigerian Lads have been struggling ever since the tournament started.

Back to Food Safety...i learnt about Salford while surfing on the internet, exactly the same way i stumbled upon IFSQN and they have both proved to be a mine of Food Safety Info for me. My goal is to start a consultancy business in food safety here in NGR after i leave my present place of work....i must tell you the opportunities are immense as the Food Safety Industry here is in its infancy and there is a shortage of people that truly understand food safety managemtn in catering as opposed to FSM in food manufacturing.

Would you like to visit Nigeria to believe?!?!!?!!

Was there HACCP in catering at Salford when you were a student thier?

Cheers

Theo

Hi Theo, I left Salford before HACCP was invented. No not quite, it was 1996, but HACCP in catering wasn't there at the time. Regarding Food Safety in Nigeria, it sounds like you have the skills and knowledge to do well. Good luck and keep in touch.

Simon
Hi Theo,

Hope all is well in Nigeria?

You mention in your post back in Feb 2008 that Nigeria is still in it’s infancy regarding HACCP / food safety, is this still the case?

You seem to have an extensive knowledge in the field and I’m guessing that the experience working with Virgin Nigeria and your other roles has been an exciting journey with much valued and good training/mentoring.

Is there an opportunity in Nigeria and indeed other neighbouring countries, to train and develop employees in food safety and HACCP or does the law not really lay down stringent practices such as those in Europe?

Do the airlines still enforce training on the cabin crew for VN and do you know if the other airlines do this also? Would there be any opportunity for companies such as Mr Bigs or Sweet Sensation to be provided with training and development for their staff or even managers?

Have you managed to set up your consultancy in the field yet? It seems that we may have similar ideas as I am looking to provide training and development in areas of the world that do not seem to a full understanding of the implications of poor food safety standards. Nigeria, India and some areas in the Far East are top of my list.

If you are still looking to set up on your consultancy let me know. If you already have, good luck and I may see you in Lagos as a friendly competitor.

Cheers
Paul
