BS 6143 - Wanted Dead or Alive!

I happened across an old TQM presentation which mentions BS 6143. Until today I'd not heard of the Standard. In the presentation it says that BS 6143 is a systematic method of measuring all quality related costs (not just those wasted in scrap). Following further research on the net I found:

BS 6143-1:1992 Guide to the economics of quality. (Process cost model).

BS 6143-2:1990 Guide to the economics of quality. (Prevention, appraisal and failure model)

However,

ISO 6143:2001 Gas analysis. Comparison methods for determining and checking the composition of calibration gas mixtures.

So either BS 6143 never became an International Standard or it has a different number.

I wondered is BS 6143 still alive and is anyone using it (past / present). If you have used BS 6143 please tell us a little about its contents uses and usefulness.

Note: The Bibliography of ISO 9004:2000 lists ISO/TR 10014:1998 Guidelines for managing the economics of quality. Maybe this is BS 6143.

BS6143 Parts 1 & 2 are still current standards. I once had a look at Part 2 and it shows the standard quality cost models of Prevention, Appraisal & Failure costs, how to gather these costs and how to report them. Nothing radicle in them at all.

I would be interested to know what's in BS 6143-1:1992 (Process cost model), if anyone has used it.

As Ian said there is nothing radical in the model.

I once completed a 6 month study using the model as a basis. The output was a very powerful tool in targeting business improvement.

Talking £££'s has a way of focusing the mind..

The significant problem with using the model was the onerous task of obtaining true costings for all the variables, I do not believe it would be sustainable on an ongoing basis.

However, once the study was complete, I indexed the cost of quality to our return & reject figures & used the study findings as a 'ready reckoner' to illustrate the cost of quality savings..

This became a simple but effective way of communicating our business improvements..

Hi Richard, long time no type.

You're right ‘Talking £££'s' has a greater impact on the people that matter in the business - why do you think the MD and the Accountant are always so close.

I like the sound of a ‘ready reckoner' If it would be of any use to others do you still have it to share?

To be honest I dont believe the model would be much use to other companies.

It was used as a snapshot in time with labour, transport, material cost etc all built in to the single output figure. All this data is only relevant to the business I was working for at the time.

I am currently working on a business improvement project in sunny Chelmsford.

Now that my former factory is closed, the powers that be realised that it may be a good idea to transfer some of the best practices that we operated to other businesses in the group.

Keeping very busy for now (hence the lack of attendance on Saferpak), down side is that it means being away from the family all week which to be honest is a bit depressing (albeit my golf handicap is improving).

It's good to see you're keeping your hand in and your talents aren't going to waste. I have to say though I wouldn't enjoy being away from home all week. I'd jump at a couple of days though.

I know its hard mate but try to keep your chin up; at least you've got some nice golfing weather at the moment.

No scandal on the Puzzle front, I'm sure he will pop up some time.

Dont worry about me too much, I'm not ready to hang myself yet, on the positive front the work down here has rekindled my enthusiasm for quality, the chaotic barrow boy mentality down here means there is a lot of scope for improvement & I am really enjoying the challenge.

I know you're from the Midlands Richard but not sure exactly where - do you consider yourself a 'Southern Softy' or are you a 'Northern Numpty' like me?

What were we talking about, oh yeah BS 6143 - It's OK we're still just about 'on topic'; the BS part anyway.

I see myself as more of a facilitator between the two. If I was really pushed and I based my decision on beer consumption I would have to be northern (just cant stand shandy)
