Changes from ISO 9001:2000 to ISO 9001:2008

Until late 2005 I worked in a manufacturing company using ISO 9001:2000. Following a hiatus of three years from quality systems I am about to implement ISO 9001 in my new small manufacturing business. I still have a copy of ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9004:2000. My questions are if I implement a system to ISO 9001:2000 how far will I be away from meeting ISO 9001:2008 and do I need a copy of the latest standard. I intend to go for certifications. Any advice would be useful and if it saves a little money in the process that would be great.

Thanks Mark and Tony, the IRCA guidance is exactly what I was searching for. It is a big help and confirms what I thought that the changes were minimal. On the second part of my question do I need a copy of the standard to hand to pass the certification audit?

I believe 9001 is a great business focused management tool, 22000 is focused on food safety, so 9001 yes if your company senior management are committed the philosophy of the standard then you have nothing to lose.

The standard is the number one requirement that auditor will gonna ask in the audit.. At this point in time just go direct to ISO 9001:2008 since its just an amendment of ISO 9001:2000 and the transition phase is only given until decemebr this year.
