Comparison of GFSI Schemes (and Codex)

GFSI has developed a document to show how recognised schemes meet the requirements set out in the GFSI Guidance Document Version 5.

The document shows a comparison across all of the schemes that have been recognised by GFSI so far, and also demonstrates how they meet the requirements set out in the Recommended International Code of Practice - General Principles of Food Hygiene established by Codex. The document will be updated as other schemes are aproved.

This document is exactly what i was looking for but I had heard that the ISO 22000 aliong with PAS99 was accepted by the GFSI, is this the case or was i misinformed.

ISO 22000 + PAS 220 = FSSC (Food Safety System Certification) 22000 which was accepted as a GFSI benchmarked standard in May 2009.

Dear Linda,

Just to amplify Tsmith's comment, the GFSI document was published in late 2007. This has been a quite active area in last 2 years and probably not finished yet.

It's OT but I hv just been reading the introduction (1998) on the FSIS program to reduce pathogens in beef in USA. One paragraph in the final rule -

- FSIS considers that responsibility for identifying and conducting procedures needed to maintain sanitary conditions rests with the establishment. Each establishment must determine for itself what procedures are necessary to prevent insanitary conditions that will cause direct product contamination or adulteration.
- Sanitation SOPs are a "pre-requisite" for HACCP.
- FSIS will not provide a single format for individual sanitation SOPs nor mandate Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), as it believes that detailed regulations are not feasible because of the difficulty of making them specific enough to be useful and resultant loss of flexibility. It would be the responsibility of each establishment to consider existing regulations and guidelines, evaluate its facilities, processes and sanitation conditions, determine those sanitation procedures that must be implemented to prevent direct product contamination or adulteration and describe these procedures in sanitation SOPs.

Now hv a look at how many "shall"s appear in the GFSI Part 2, Annext1 .

Just a point of clarification: I think the FSSC 22000 was "benchmarked" in 2009, whereas it was just fully accepted in February 2010. I'm not sure if the term "accepted" is correct; in fact, I seem to be getting more confused over the matter the more I look into it. Maybe someone can help me understand the process a bit better:

Can anyone explain to me the recent news (in the newsletter for this forum) that the "Primus GFS" and the "Synergy 22000" schemes are now recognized by the GFSI? Does this mean that they are now accepted as equivalent to the other standards as well, or is this just another step along the way? I can't seem to find an answer in this forum, or at the GFSI web site.

Hi Jon, I know what you mean, very confusing. From what I've read they are fully recognized. The news was sent to us from GFSI themselves.

Hi, as far as I know the PAS 220 is replaced by ISO/TS 22002:2009-1 (which is exactly the same as PAS 220)...
