HACCP for Wastewater treatment plant?
Started by Micro, Feb 04 2011 03:40 PM
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if a HACCP plan is required for a Wastewater treatment plant that uses the water only for agricultural purposes. I know that there are some parameters on BOD, COD and other chemical and microbiological criteria that must be met but i dont know if all this can be covert under some GHP and GMP.
Any ideas or references will be helpfull.
Many thanks.

BUMP for micro.
Dear Micro,
I don't think HACCP is mandatory in your case since the water is not for human consumption. I have attached one document referring to a HACCP study for wastewater and one from the EU on the use of wastewater in agriculture with some info about HACCP as well.
The links below are from FAO and have a lot of useful information.
Wastewater treatment and use in agriculture
Water quality for agriculture
All the regulations I found at EU level are directives therefore you should look if those have been implemented in your country's with specific regulations.
EU Directive

Marco

If you are not using the treated water for the production process, then HACCP plan is not required
Dear Marco,
Thanks for the interesting and informative attachments.
It is important to note that “HACCP” has been substantially re-invented here compared to the typical Codex implementation, eg the interpretation of hazard is –
First document - Standard definition of 'hazard' is a potential source of harm; 'harm' is physical injury or damage to the health of people or damage to property or the environment.
Second document - Product hazards in wastewater treatment are those parameters in the “product” eg the final effluent or biosolids which are nominated in the EPA licence as having to meet specific criteria for compliance. These may include: Biochemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, ammonia-nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, pH, chlorine residual, metals, E.coli, litter, etc.
(EPA is presumably the Environmental Protection Agency)
