Hi,
Just want to create a general-talk... regarding KPI's. So that people can understand the usage of KPI better in QA functions (including me). Waiting for the reply from the experts
1.What is the most important KPI for Quality Assurance department in Food Industry
2. Are you really measuring your KPI's or only for the sake of management?
3.Do you link KPI with each individual job descriptions & job functions - do you give knowledge to the employee about his contribution to the KPIs?.

anish

I'm on maternity leave at the moment and currently between jobs (handed in my notice at one and taken another.) IME, for number 1 it has to be complaints. Micro a close second in some sites but complaints are easy to measure, give direct feedback and are easy to see changes in. For 2, no, I have always lived and breathed them. I brief to shift teams, put up displays showing what's happening to them and talk about them in every production meeting. Technical needs to keep the technical KPIs on the agenda so people think about them every day. No 3 is probably where the companies I've worked for have fallen down in the past. The GM normally has some technical KPIs but shift managers etc in my knowledge have not. Without that, they probably don't see it as their job tbh so I think it's a good idea to do this.
Dear Anish,

I'm too tired to google.

What does the "K" stand for ?

Surely it cannot be coefficient ?

Thanks for the post GMO. Exactly Customer complaints is one good indicator. And really good to know about your contribution (The word - "breathed" shows your dedication). In my career life, I have never seen any of my senior manager using the terminology KPI. I dont know whether this is because of unawarenes or their thought that KPI is the managers property.
But in my old company being a middle level manager - I linked my department objective with each team member's goal. This is specially to share the work, to give ownership and get the work easily .
Charles,

Thanks for the joke!. We are awaiting for your valuable reply.

Dear Anish,

I'm afraid you flatter my humourous ability. (But thanks anyway)

It seems i am a poor guesser also.

Thanks to google , I now also know that -

A KPI can follow the SMART criteria.

PS, an off-the-cuff answer to yr No.1 might be "survival"

Answering your question number 3:definitively YES, each person has the right and should be informed about the evoluiton of KPI msotly if he/she is part of the team in charge of the project which the KPI is related to.
There are lots of books regardind High Performance Teams,Team Building, Reinventing Management etc that could confirm this.

Best regards
Esther

KPIs are mostly targeted to the management. In general
1. Finance utilization as per/within the budget.
2. Reduce customer complaints ( a conparative reduction based on previous yr statistics)
3. Execution of Food safety systems within a time period.
4. Development of a new product/process capability
5. Identification of a cost effective quality Vendor for the calibration of laboratory equipment and reduce the expense.
6. Utilization of Finished good inventory and reduce the overstock ( convert goods to cash)- Non moving product.
7. Competency improvement through an effective training programme and appraisal system.
...........................................and so on

Hi Anish,

RFT (another Jargon !) is surely a good KPI to show if procedures and systems are working. This is linked to the annual bonus of every worker and u bet, they know the meaning!

Our KPI for an increase in TLA is on track I see!

Dear All,

Jargon-loving people might be interested in these (serious / half-promotional) documents. The source website mentioned (frequently!) seemed a little creepy to me but maybe it's just my imagination. (I found stated concepts like "one major use for KPIs is to control people" a bit too honest for comfort).

Now I know what KPQ is also.

Dear Anish,

While waiting for the incandescent GMO, here's my suggestion -

(an example of obssessive usage )

Selling raw materials to the food and feed markets, we operate a number of KPI's.

Product Safety: We analyse our product on presence and levels of undesirable substances to ensure products sold are safe. Here we monitor tonnage that have elevated levels present divided over total tonnage sold. This may not exceed 2%.

Product Quality: For each customer complaint, audit finding, etc. we monitor the tonnage of product involved. Also this is divided over total tonnage sold. This may not exceed 1%.

Customer Satisfaction: Here we use the product safety and product quality KPI's, together with number of complaints and on-time delivery. If these are within limits, customer satisfaction is ok.

Business Perfromance: Monthly we monitor sold volume vs previous year and vs budgeted. If positive, also indicator for good customer satisfaction levels.

These are communicated to Management Committee monthly. Together with financial performance (coming from finance department) we operate a small but key set of performance indicators.

HI Anish

I am a QA Manager in Non Dairy Creamer Industry in Indonesia, recently i just make KPI for My departmen so i'll try to answer your questions :

1. The most important KPI is the KPI that have significant effect to your company performance such as costumer complaint, both HAzard and Quality complaints

2. In my department, we really measure that KPI achievement, and the achievement can effect not only for Company performance but for individual performance that effect to our bonus and salary increase.

3. yes. i must casacade the KPI'S QA depatment to my subordinary based on job Desc and Job responsibility (job function)

thats my Opinions

TLA = three letter acronym, ie substituting a phrase for three letters. I love the fact that three letter acronym has a three letter acronym.

TFL = transport for london I think?! Did I put that in my post???
