Do you consider drivers as visitors?

Regarding visitor reporting system. do you consider drivers from vehicles, who come to load and unload products, as visitors?
With other words, do you require them to sign the visitor register, if they do not come into your product handling and storage areas?

I would say you do not have to require them to sign a visitor log sheet. I think the drivers should only be allowed to enter a reception area to talk to shipping and receiving personnel. The doors going into any production or storage area from this reception area should be locked and only authorized personnel shall have a key to enter the production or storage area through this door.

I agree with the above statement as long as the facility HAS a seperate dock area from their processing areas. I have seen facilities where drivers were allowed in and right next to the loading docks there were the packaging employees doing their jobs. The areas were not seperated and the drivers had access to it. In this instance I would require the drivers to sign in as a visitor. A college of mine once told me that a driver entered a building and was allowed to walk through the processing areas to go to the restrooms. While walking to the restrooms the driver saw a mouse and called the state department of ag. on the company and they had to go through 2 days of intense audits by the state dept of ag. inspectors.

I do not think that drivers should sign as visitors, and in my opinion they should not be allowed to enter production area, but it is necessary for the door to be locked? In my case we have only one door separating production from reception area, when the drivers get to the door, the receiving personnel opens, but the drivers stays outside. Anyway the door remains open during the loading of trucks. What do you think? is it wrong? we only do the selection of eggs by weight not egg products.

We do require drivers to sign into our facility. We have secured access to all entries in the facility and to get into the building they must acquire a electronic pass card from the gate house. This card will only give them access to certian areas of the facility and by no means access to production areas. This was all part of our "Food Security Program" after 911.

I think it depends on the permise as well. If you have an enclosed permise where the driver reports at the gate it is easiers to register all the drivers in one log.

Here the drivers don't report at the gate as there are three gates and three different companies working at the same permise. Working together, but there is no total list who's there in case of an emerency. Production areas are always closed, so there is no food risk. However thinking about some sort of control due to case of a fire etc.

There is one log which we are oblidge to have as there is a cooling tower on the permise. If there is someone working close to the tower they need to sign the log as of the legionella bacteria disaster that happened a few years ago in the Netherlands. However no drivers are coming near the tower.

So a part yes and part no answer.
