Indoor Plants in a Food Manufacturing Area

Dear All,

As per the GMP, it is strongly not recommended to grow vegetation adjacent to building. So my question is - Is it allowed to keep the indoor plants in the Food Manufacturing area - like money plant, lucky bamboo and other indoor plants?.

Regards,
Anish

Personally I like to see some plants in my work environment. It helps to break up the perfuntionary athomosphere of most work places. But obviously this is not the case in food production environments, prepartion rooms, storage areas etc.

In administration offices, visitor reception areas they are a common feature and I would struggle to see any issue in these areas.

In George Orwell's novel ... Keep the Aspidistra Flying... he declares war on the humble house-plant. I dont think we need to go that far
I agree that plants should not be in the food production areas. Although I have heard of auditors raising the issue of plants in Administration Offices, I have not dealt with that personally.

One of the reasons to eliminate exterior vegetation is to reduce areas that harbor pests. Bringing a plant into a food production area just adds a harborage area for insects, and the point of any good pest control program is to minimize the risks.

I agree they're a welcome addition to the office and conference areas. But they have no place in your sterile, pest free production areas.

It is not allowed to keep the indoor plants in the Food Manufacturing area - no matter what the plant is.

I'd be equally as worried about Listeria in the soil the plant is in, and where the water would go from watering it!
What if the plant is directly grown in water without soil?.
Also I want to ask your opinion about the plant offices - which is inside the plant?.

So what about water borne pathogens/ microbes?
I would say water borne pathogens are big concern.

I would also say any offices that open directly onto the production floor are suspect. In a long about way, this does include my office, and I do have plants in it. However there is about 30 feet of an L shape corridor, so I feel this does not pose a threat to our production floor.

Keep plants out of your plants, including the lucky bamboo - put that outside and spread the luck around instead of spreading the issues that plants and soils cause inside a food manufacturing plant.

I also like to keep plants in offices and working areas. I have a good garden in front of my office which have great flowers and trees. Also near the administration area and the reception, there is a bunch of plants which i kept near them to create some greenery and freshness in the office. I am not agree with keeping the plants in production area...

Dear Setanta,

Yes indeed. For some products / locations this could be a critical NC.

not in food areas !!, ok in offices !

try plastic plants if any problems !!

I have faced an audit where the auditor was damn adamant on removing plants from the corridor in the reception stating that instead of minimizing risk we are inviting it

And his refusal was not at all related to pathogens....but flies, mosquitoes and dust generation (due to the soil in the pot) ! His question was "Why I am deliberately trying to first create risk and then test my controls measures !"
