NC 1.1.3: Measurable food safety & quality objectives not set
Hello there,
Our Company has recently been audited against the above standard. One of the NC we received was against ref 1.1.3 - the detail of which was:
Measurable food safety and quality objectives have not been formally set.
I'm not entirely sure how to close this one out. If anyone could please help I would be forever grateful
Many Thanks
Ian
Hi Ian,
Great question. I was just wondering this exact same thing and had turned to the forum for answers. I am in the process of documenting and implementing a FSQMS compliant with BRC with the aim of having our company BRC certified by end of next year. This just about the only requirement of BRC that has me stumped.
I look forward to some input and answers from other members.
Cheers

I did not see any immediate posts specific to the SD standard but the links below are a random selection from the many suggestions for other food / packaging standards on this forum. My guess is that the basic requirement will be extremely similar across standards.

@Ian - if above does not help, I suggest you post the particular reason for the NC so maybe can get some relevant feedback.

Hi Ian,
:welcome:
You need to issue food safety & quality objectives authorised by the most senior manager on site.
Here are example Food Safety and Quality Objectives:
To maintain certification to the BRC standard with no major non-conformances
To ensure that all food storage and deliveries are 100% compliant with relevant legislative requirements.
To ensure that all premises used for the storage and distribution of food are registered with the appropriate Authority
To ensure that all food handlers have received basic food hygiene training within 3 months of start of employment
To ensure at all times that there is authorised release of products only when they have been confirmed as complying with agreed specifications 100% of the time
To pro-actively promote and encourage a culture of continuous improvement within the company by measuring performance and taking action meet the following criteria:
- > 98% food safety audit score
- 100% investigation of complaints & written response within 7 days
- < 1% downgraded product
- No major GMP non-conformances
- To reduce complaint levels by 10% year on year
- To reduce customer rejections/returns by 10% year on year
Regards,
Tony
Ian:
If you don't mind, why not post your current food safety and quality objectives here (I am sure your company has already came out with your own policy and objectives otherwise your auditor will write: "Measurable food safety and quality objectives have not been evident"). You will sure to receive plenty of feedbacks from the forum members.

Some good examples provided by Tony.
In your policy you state your intentions, which is just a load of old waffle unless you have measurable objectives that you can demonstrate how you are performing against them. Performance against objectives must be on the agenda at management review where you should determine how well or not you are meeting stated aims and objectives and where you need to target resources and improve. And perhaps add/edit/remove objectives based on current / future needs of the business, market, customers etc.
