Hi,

I am currently putting together a medical screening program for cracker manufacturer. I would like to know some of the test that are commonly conducted during medical screening. So far i have the following:

Salmonella

gastroenteritis

widal test

staphylococcus & streptococcus

Hepatitis A, B, C

full blood count

physical examination

urine test.

I would really appreciate your views.

I would also like to know if it is possible to meet the medical screening clause without doing medical examination on employees.

Hello Jessica,

In my company for medical screening we have a questionnaire form where the employees are asked information such as if they have any cuts, lesions; if they have been diagnosed with typhoid or have been a Salmonella carrier; any signs of fever or vomiting; also we ask if they've been outside the country in the last 2 months and where.

We just got our BRC certification and that seemed to comply with the medical screening requirements.

It all depends on your country legislation as well.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Regards,

Loredana

Dear Jessicacff,

In fact there are numerous sample forms previously posted on this forum if you do a little searching.

Sometimes (local) legislatory food issues are involved. And sometimes individual legal rights also.

thanks much the information is very helpful.

Do visitors and contractors need to complete a medical questionnaire? on our visitors questionnaire we ask question like in the last month have you suffered from diarrhoea or vomiting, salmonella, skin rashes or boils.

We have a general GMP's form for all visitors and contractors: besides the main GMP guidelines we added medical questions: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cuts/lesions, skin infection, typhoid, salmonella, last country visited (few last weeks). The form has to be signed both by the visitor/contractor as well as by a designated company representative.

Thanks alot this is very helpful.

Hi,

Does everyone working in the plant eg (sales, marketing) need to fill out a medical screening questionnaire or only the persons working in the production environment?

I will have them sign only if they are to go on the production floor, were the risk of being in direct contact with food is high. Besides the medical screening, I will have them sign the GMP one too.

Hi Jessica,

Two points to add the the useful FSA document posted by Charles:

BRC Guidance adds:

The company shall be expected to define the infections of concern as advised by local legislation (e.g. list of communicable diseases).

So you should source local advice as well.

BRC Guidance also adds:

The company may consider the use of a pre-employment and/or return to work medical questionnaire or medical examination (e.g. stool testing), as appropriate to the risk.

So the higher the risk of your products the more likely a medical examination is required.

Kind regards,

Tony
