Auditing a finished lot for defects
Does anyone have an SOP or procedure for auditing a finished lot for defects?
More information is required.
A finished lot of what?
Are there specifications? Customer requirements?
Marshall
I was looking for a guideline for an SOP on random sampling of a finished lot of product (any food)- looking for a quality defect.
If you suspect a quality defect - or just want to verify that the specification was met during production.
Is there a specific sampling plan that is recommended? I have always heard "square root + 1" but this seems a bit excessive (example: we have 3686 units in a batch - that would be 62 units to inspect).
We are under the cannery regulations and from time to time the inspector wants to verify a specific quality attribute. I need to put together an SOP so that we inspect consistently - and it does not get out of hand. I was hoping to have this inspection done by my team in a controlled fashion - and have the inspector accept the records of the inspection in lieu.
I was looking for sampling standards - if there are any that exist in this situation.
Thanks for your help
Hi Mazie,
Square rooots and the like are semi-scientifically based.
Tthe options typically relate to yr acceptable limits, yr desired accuracy, the variation of the attribute within the lot, whether destructive or non-destructive sampling is involved, cost of analysis, etc, etc.
As mgourley stated, it all depends on the details.
In principle, there are (at least) 2 basic approaches to yr attribute query. As a starter, could have a look at this post and the surrounding thread -
Hi Mazie,
just as addendum to previous, these 3 threads are primarily non-AQL oriented -

HI,
I have used mil inspections in the past for this type of inspection. Interactive sampling plans can be found at www.sqconline.com. Hope this helps.

Appears to require an account / money
Just google "mil std 105d"
This standard is no longer supported by the US Army, but the tables are still valid and replicated in ANSI/ASQ Z1.4: Sampling procedures and Tables for Attribute Sampling.. Unfortunately $159, though
As a free example you will find in google ...
