Development of a Robust Foreign Material Detect & Prevent Program
Development of a Robust Foreign Material Detection and Prevention Program
Presented by:
Robert Rogers, Senior Advisor for Food Safety & Regulation, Mettler-Toledo
Taking place:
Friday, June 19, 2015 (03:00 PM - 04:00 PM UK Time). This is a 10 a.m. Eastern Start.
Customer complaints and product recalls due to contamination from foreign material continue to be a common occurrence. There is no "silver bullet" when it comes to prevention and detection of foreign material. It is important to understand the various methods and what advantages and dis-advantages each method has. This presentation will provide information regarding various methods to control, detect and remove products that have been contaminated with foreign material.

Simon Timperley: Try watching on youtube. Type IFSQN Youtube in google
Staci: Question about magnets: is there a required threshold for pull strength?
Yanuar Hendarto: the slides look good
ion] mauro: how can you validate the mgnets sistem?
Michelle: It's fine on my end.
derrion: Morning Team: #teamfoodsafety
Abha: what should be the required strength of magnet and what should be the frequency to check for deterioration of magnets
Staci: Abha, you should check your magnet strength during an annual calibration
The: How to calibrate the metal detector?
derrion: for my plant (coffee) we do quarterly checks - a pull strength check, and weekly checks to ensure that it is removing items...
mauro: Staci how can you calibrate the magnets?
Staci: Derrion, I'm in coffee too! :)
YOUSSEF: What about sources of foreign materials?
Abha: is there a specific strength of magnet to be efficient
Staci: Mauro, we have an external company that comes out to test our pull strength. He compares to to our previous data points and charts the magnet life
derrion: staci we need to talk!........
enrique r: ceramic magnets are they a good alternative to rare earth magnets?
Yanuar Hendarto: foreign material from raw material or steel friction through the process
mauro: Staci I'm looking something to made at home
ion] sheetal: how do you do Metal detector test piece size validation?
Staci: There are pull tests you can buy if you want to do it yourself. It checks the pounds per square inch, if i'm not mistaken.
mauro: Sheetal there are some guide to choice the size (se Tesco guidelines for metal deterctor)
sheetal: Thanks mauro
Staci: Wouldn't that be nice.....
ANIBAL GRASSO: Hello, Anibal, From Uruguay is attending now
mauro: Sheetal search this Foreign Object DetectionUsing metal detectors to
ion] Pritam: What type of metal detector would you recommend for ice creams?
mauro: Sheetal als othis Basic Principles of Metal Detection
duygu: Hello Everybody, This is Duygu, from Turkey
JeffC: Hello
Cyril: HELLO
ANIBAL GRASSO: Presentation image is out of focus.
Raman: Hi
Gurpreet: why the sensors should not be tested without product.
Tessmania Chew: Is X-Ray Inspection Systems suitable for red meat plant as compared to metal detector unit?
mauro: can you suggest to us some guideline to validate the different system of detection (MD- X-ray - magnets)? thanks
Bria: For the challenge tests how would suggest performing the challenge if you aren't able to put the detector wand in a position that its in the middle of the detection window? Such as using package products. Would it not be ok to place the wand underneath the package.
Venice: how to set up the threshold of a metal detector?
Malconm: Do active mobile devices pose a risk of interference with a metal detector and X-ray? Is there a defined "safe" operating distance to not cause interference if mobile devices do cause interference?
ANA MARIA: hello from Quebec city, canada
oluyemi Arosoye: hello
Abha: for a freeze dried product, the metal detector is more suitable or an x-ray inspection system
oluyemi Arosoye: It is blurred. Kindly do somethin
derrion: what about the 21 is that apart of the contaminant! slide 22
Simon Timperley: It is your connection oluyemi. As an alternative try watching on IFSQN youtube channel Type in google.
oluyemi Arosoye: Okay, thanks. I would do just that
Patrick: What is the effectivness of X-Rays in glass contamination detection?
mauro: How can I detect wood in food products?
Staci: Patrick, with this method we just heard, glass sinks, so it should be detected.
Sumeet: Is there any device that can be used to detect foreign materials having density less than 1 example wood, paper, insects?
smita: why detectors do have false rejects sometimes?
Venice: if walk talk radio is used in the line, does this affect the performance of the metal detector?
Malconm: Oluyemi, you can also try to use google chrome
ula childs: Is all bone material detectable with x ray?
Venice: is there any max and minimum size of product to be pass thru metal detector?
James: Is the geometric center of the field also the geometric center of the detector aperture?
Carol Andrade: how frequently should you calibrate the X-ray or metal detector and why is this important
Dhirendra: No issue with sound and picture at my end.
ion] ula childs: What is the best way to cahllenge the x ray detector?
Myrto: Can an aluminium lidding foil sealing a food product be an issue for the utilization of metal detector?
Jeffrey Combs: If we get a detectior. Do we need to make it a CCP in my HACCP plan.
Greg: Thanks - great presentation
Staci: rare earth magnets! dry product
Carol Andrade: how frequently should you calibrate the x-ray or metal detector and why is this importrant
Mark: Jeffrey Combs . Yes
Daniel: not at all
smita: how to clean magnet, metal detectors, x -ray etc?
Malconm: What normally makes magnets lose their strength rapidly in a food processing environment? How can we minimize such loss in strength?
Patrick: 'It is generally not possible to calibrate metal detectors but they need to be serviced regularly'I came across this statement from a guidance document, Is it true?
Patrick: 'It is generally not possible to calibrate metal detectors but they need to be serviced regularly'I came across this statement from a guidance document, Is it true?
YOUSSEF: Would you can send the manual for both metal and X Rays sets
Albertus Viljoen: J Combs - depends on your risk assessment and CCP determination
Venice: If frozen and chilled products are combined in one packed finished product, is this an issue during metal detecton test?
Bria: Patrick what guidance did you find that in?
Mark: Frozen and chilled in one package? frozen product is set at a certain temp and chilled at another. Don't quite understand that??
Daniel: Where did 330 come from?
sheetal: thank you very much rebert.
Patrick: It was a Code of Practice document from Tesco(I found it on the IFSQN discussion forums page)
YOUSSEF: Thanks a lot for your kind efforts
Humberto: Is there a way to set/target an x-ray machine to read the density of the product, and then make the x ray detect any values out of that range?
sheetal: I am very grateful of Simon to bring this kinds of subjects, which helps a lot . Thanks you very much. Thanks Robert for this wonderful webinar.
Constantine: I also would like to say thanks for this good webinar.
smita: Thank you Robert! it is great presentation and Thanks Simon...!! for bringing this platform for us
