HACCP for 3PL company (Third Party Logistics)
Hi,
I work as Quality Assurance Coordinator in a third party logistics. We are trying to develop a HACCP plan as per our client's request.
My challenge has started at first step about product description. Since we are third party warehouse, the volume of different products that we receive from our clients is very high and they are constantly changing. I don't know how I can keep up with product list for HACCP. Is there any way that we group the products and have a list of each group.
I really appreciate your professional insights,
Simin
Hi Simin,
Can you give a brief outline of the products? I worked previously with a company who dealt with many products and they grouped them backed on many different factors such as 'breaded products' ( nuggets, chicken burgers), 'Bone in' (drumsticks, thighs), 'Frozen' (any product stored differently due to frozen nature as per customer requirement).. If you have different animal types such as chicken, beef or pork could you group them in that manner?

Hi Simin,
Additionally to previous post, is any particular Standard / module / clause involved ?
Well, we will be audited against client's audit. They didn't ask for specific standard and have their own questionnaire, which is mostly HACCP Plan and PRPs.
Grouping products;
Thank you for your suggestions. We do not have fridge or freezer required products. They are all packaged products to be kept in ambient environment.
I am thinking if I go with group of for example beverages- cans, beverages - plastic bottles, etc., then my list should be fine.
Regards,
Simin

Hi Simin,
From a HACCP POV, typical grouping factors are based on similarity of features such as - flowchart, CCPs. this is a common situation in Foodservice scenarios such as school meal supplies, etc.
Hi Sghaderi,
I agree with the first comments. Group product in like-category on forms 1 and 2. If everything comes in the same packaging, then form 2 becomes easier. A Master Item list helps a lot. You can do one risk assessment and define handling procedures based on identified risk for all potential product.
You could also include in your transportation PP (B 2.1.3 if you are following FSEP), that you have an approval process. Probably and EDI or WMS inventory system will give you evidence of product approval when you are setting up new items in your software system.
Thanks.
