Hi members,

I have been implementing BRC / IOP Standard for the previous issue but this one got me off-guard. The standard requires a procedure on product recall. From the definition, product recall is any measure aimed at achieving the return of an unfit product form customers and final consumer. In my case, my product shall only be sold to customers who have specified their requirements and the material shall not be for trade but to be consumed by the brand owners only. Do I therefor need to establish a product recall procedures together with a product withdrawal procedures, a bit confusing. Kindly advise.

Regards

Philip

Hi Philip,

You are correct in your definitions:

Product recall Any measures aimed at achieving the return of an unfit product from customers and final consumers.
Product withdrawal Any measures aimed at achieving the return of out-of-specification or unfit products from customers,
but not from final consumers.

3.12.6 relates to product recalls initiated by the brand owner in your case: A procedure to manage product recalls initiated by the brand owner or specifier shall be documented

So this will be how you will assist in this recall including as a minimum:
• identification of the key personnel involved in assessing potential recalls, together with clearly defined responsibilities
• a communications plan that includes methods of informing customers and (where necessary) regulatory bodies in a timely manner
• corrective action and business recovery
• review of any recalls in order to conduct root cause analysis and implement appropriate improvements as required.

Kind regards,

Tony
