How do you know if you are required to have a 3rd Party Certification?
Hello IFSQN friends!
So I am still trying to get steady in my new role as PCQI. I've been seeing a lot of stuff about 3rd party certifications. Under what circumstances is it a good idea/required for a company to have one?
We are a small fermented beverage company. Which, if any, would we want to pursue? Or is it more important that we ask our suppliers for their certifications?
Thank you!

Hi eryng,
Have you already been through the PCQI course ?
Dear Eryna,
Your customers will tell it you in first place. Furthermore it's a good thing to see what's usually asked in your branch/market.
Kind regards,
Gerard Heerkens
3rd party certification is a requirement by some customers in order to purchase your product. The other reason you may pursue it is to increase your food safety program and/or expand into new markets

I sure have!
IMEX third-party certifications have always been part of a business deal. You could be pro-active and research the requirements of GFSI schemes and other third-party certificates to see what you would need to implement one or more of them, but I would wait to pursue actual certification until you find out what your customers would require from you first.
Hi,
It's usually mitigated by the customer.
Third-party certifications are a good idea from a business standpoint, but remember that they do not substitute for the on-site audit requirements under FSMA.
