Ideas on hiring a Food Safety Manager

Hi everyone,

I work for a Bread company in South San Francisco, CA USA. We are looking to recruit another Food Safety Manager for our other division but we are having a struggle finding candidates for the job. I started with the company as a mixer and was promoted based on being a qualified Food safety specialist, when the opening came up so there was no need to use job boards/recruiting firms.  One consultant told us indeed and the likes are of no use and that we should consider hiring recent graduates from schools but this has not yielded results. Please can anyone familiar with the process in the US help to shed more light on how we can put our adverts on job boards and list of job boards we can use or other ways to go about it?

Personally, Indeed is very popular, so I have no idea as to why he would suggest not to use that platform.

Are the salary and benefits being offered competitive?  You can use salary.com to determine what type of salary should be offered in your area for that type of position.  I see no reason why you wouldn't be successful in recruiting someone unless there is an issue with the compensation package.  

I would caution putting a fresh grad in a management position like that.....

Indeed doesn't cost very much so might still be worth it

You're trying to source from a very small pond i'm afraid, we don't make up a huge portion of the trained work force, I would advertise where ever you can

Is there alot of food manufacturing there, what's the unemployment rate?  Both will factor into the difficulty of finding an ideal candidate never mind more than 1 to choose from

I get contacted all the time by head hunters. Unfortunately, the positions either require a bachelor's degree (I dont have a degree, just experience) or they are in some part of the US that I'd never want to live. When I'm job hunting, I use mostly Monster, Indeed, or Craigslist - although there are a lot of scammers on CL. Also, I personally don't feel comfortable in a management role even though I've done it before (hate it - hate managing people! lol), why don't you put an ad for a FS/QA Asst manager...you might get a lot of Supervisors that are looking to further their career. It only really works if you have someone to oversee and guide them, though. But people like to grow from within, so it might be worth a shot.
