Hello,

I just finished up on audit and was stumped on not having pest control training for staff. I do not even know what that would look like. I devise a pwrpt that covers best practices at prevention, but I was not sure if there is something in specific that I am supposed to target. Do you have any suggestions? Any information is greatly

appreciated.

Thank you,

What kind of Audit - SQF?

You should at least cover the necessity for staff to report to supervision if they see any instances of pests in the facility.
Other topics would be why pests are "bad", etc....what types of pests are likely on your area, etc.

You are not training people to be pest control experts but at a minimum, that they need to let someone know that you saw something somewhere.

You need some kind of pest identification

You need pest sighting training like where to report ..how to report?  Whom to report to?

Then cover how pest can come about? Eg housekeeping, door sweeps , closing doors

Handling mousetraps or correct orientation

Hi Bella,

Some Context is required.

Are Pests seen ? Does Pest Control (PC) Exist ?

Contracting PC out is a popular solution for major aspects but FS Standards usually require an internal (daily) routine also.

We keep ours brief.  No pest control chemicals are stored on site.  If you come into contact with a pest device or bait then you are required to wash your hands.  We also do a brief overview of the pest devices used.

We are certificated to BRC. To cover the pest control section we had our local pest control company come in and train key members of management, warehouse and supervisors in how to recognise pests, how to treat / handle bait boxes etc and how to spot signs of pest activity. I also wrote a pest control procedure with the information given in the course for the supervisors to train their staff with. It started with how to spot activity, the difference between mice and rat faces, trails etc. then there was a section with pictures of diffrerent flies and crawling insects to keep an eye out for and the final section detailed how to reduce pest activity e.g door control, cleaning, how to deal with bait boxes and reporting signs of activity or spotting pest activity. This has always got us through without issues. Pest control is also on our annual refresher traiining to keep these signs and the need for reporting fresh in everyones mind.
