Sifting Screen Mesh Size UK

The FDA mesh size to control foreign body contamination is 7mm.

Is anyone aware of the standard in the UK?

Hi, HACCPCOR.

 

AFAIK, size is "not defined" in UK standards but, mentioned in general is to control physical hazard. Also, I think, what CANADA have is stricter (2mm) relative to any regulations in terms of physical hazard limit.

As pointed above there is no strict mesh control but below is some guidance on the expected mesh size for different ingredients 

 

Raw Material

 

 

Sieve Size

 

Wine

0.45-0.65 micron

Fats and oils, water, brine, liquid egg, liquid colours and flavours.

500 micron

White flour, baking powder, ground spices, PDV salt, ascorbic acid, potassium sorbate, sodium bicarbonate, icing sugar, soya flour, egg powder, milk powder.

850 micron

 

Maize grits, potato granules, potato flake, wheat starch, potato starch, maize flour, rice flour.

Jams and fillings, syrups, liquid chocolate, liquid coatings, liquid creams, liquid malt, malic acid.

1 mm

 

Salt, powdered flavours, granulated sugars, muffin and cake pre- mixes without additions, dry chemicals and enzymes, wheat and rice protein, cheese powder, cocoa powder, semolina, dextrose, yeast powder, pea fibre.

2.5 mm (dry chemicals and enzymes a maximum of 2.5mm)

Wholemeal flour, herbs and spices, small seeds, bran, rye meal, oat meal, other coarse powders.

 

5 mm

Dark brown soft sugar, rolled oats
