Accelerated shelf life test for microbiological hazards

Dear all,

Is there any approach in the line that we can adopt for accelerated shelf life test specifically or applicable to microbiological aspect? Q10 is not suitable for microbial prediction. Any other options that we can use? Thank you.

Accelerated shelf life testing (microbiological, backed up with sensory) using Q10 model is the common way of calculating shelf life.

If there a specific reason why you cannot use the Q10 formula?.... you don't say why this is?...

If it has been prohibited by your customer (sometimes they don't accept this as valid)  you might have to test throughout standard shelf life....

Hi hstin,

It may depend on the specific context, eg product/storage conditions,safety/non safety parameter, but one possible answer is Yes as is clear from one possible definition of shelf life -

In  general,  shelf  life  is  quoted  in  terms  of  storage  time  in days before sensory rejection. Associated with sensory rejection are  microbial  and  chemical  parameters  that  individually  or  in
combination provide indicators to spoilage.

An operational example of how this might be micro. applied is detailed in the 3rd pdf file in this link (particularly see the discussion section) -

Hi hstin,

in most cases Q10 gives a good estimation for micro shelf life, often not for overall shelf life (dependent on product, conditions etc.).

The applicability is given as long as the kinetic follows pseudo first order kinetics. i.e. effect only dependent on one parameter e.g. temperature only.
