BRC - OPRP VS CCP and Validation
Hi All
Just a quick one on OPRPS and CCPS?
BRC issue 8 speaks about identifying CCPS under section 2.8. by use of a decission tree. Currently, Im using the HACCP CCP identification tree and 6 CCPS have been identified. This for an edible oil company however as I undergo a number of global customer audits it has been advised that there are two many CCPS and some of them should actually be an OPRPs e.g. strainer and filter bag units - preservative for yeast and mould etc (not pathogenic bacteria but rather spoilage bacteria). I recently underwent training on an introductory course on FSSC 22000:2018 and had a better understanding of OPRPs and logically from looking at my hazard analysis and applying the OPRP/CCP decision tree kind of put everything in persepective.
However this is the confusion that I am at in the moment - Would having OPRPs identified and referencing the OPRP decision tree will it be an issue during BRC audit - ?
Would a validation study be required for a OPRP?
Kind Regards
Hello Nassu,
Having all that and its number doesn't matter if that actually fulfills the requirements and depend on how complex your line is. A logical mapping of your process and analysis should have to be there, however.
Yes, a validation study is required for OPRPs as well

Hi Nassu,
Unfortunately, afaik, yr query is based on a misunderstanding.
BRC's HACCP content adheres to the basic Principles of "Codex HACCP" which does not involve OPRPs. The latter terminology was invented in iso22000.
IMEX, 6 CCPs often means that you have misunderstood haccp or under-utilised PRPs. Perhaps you could post yr Process/CCPs for comments ?
PS - Spoilage bacteria (ie non-safety related) are not relevant to a hazard analysis in Codex or ISO haccp methodologies although BRC (for reasons best known to itself) does include "Quality" factors in its raw material clause on risk assessment requirements.
Hi
Lets breakdown the CCPS
CCP1 : Discharge Polishing Filter bag - monitoring differential pressure of the product which goes into storage tanks - this prodcut is stored and late used in other end products such as bottling- margarine spreads etc and bulk tanker loads ( in addition has filter units)
CCP2: Polishing Filter of oil prior to being filled in bottles - this is checked at the start of the shift
CCP3: Addition of preservative and and acid regulator for the prevention of bacterial growth
CCP4 - 3mm strainer/sieve for blends prior to packaging - start of the shift
CCP 5 - Metal detector 2 types a pipeline prior to packing and an online after packing
Hope this can add further clarification
Kind Regards

Hi Nassu,
Thks for info.
I am slightly unclear as to whether the CCPs above were analysed with respect to fssc22000 or BRC.
The Product detail/Process Flowchart is required to properly evaluate potential hazards and then CCPs.
However offhand, I doubt whether more than 2/5 CCPs are required, maybe less.
