What policies and procedures are required when allowing smoking?
Our company will going forward allowing employees to have smoke breaks after so many years with the non smoking policy. My question other than policy, procedures and uniform policy what else is required from a BRC standpoint? If anyone has any examples I would like to view.
Curious to know why after having a non-smoking policy in place that you are now allowing smoking?
I am also curious as to why allow smoking? What are violations of smoking policy and procedure? What is corrective action if designated smoking area violated?

To bring in more new employees.

Violations hasn't been discussed just yet. Corrective action I have no clue just yet. This is first for me.

Hi MrsPowell,
Not surprisingly with such a debatable topic there is a vast amount of information/opinions on Google.

IIRC BRC's website offers a direct route to pose such questions to "them" although any responses may be UK oriented.
We prohibit eating, drinking, chewing gums and using tobacco products at our production facility. If employee goes outside for cigarette, they wash their hands after returning to the facility.
We too walked back on a several years long "No smoking" policy near the end of last year, retaining and enticing workers was one of the chief reasons for doing so.
Can't really speak on BRC, but as part of our employee starter GMP training we explain to employees:
- Smoking and tobacco products only allowed in the 2 designated areas (these are out near the road, about 30 feet from facility)
- No tobacco products can be stored OR carried inside production area or GMP areas
- Employees and Temps MUST wash their hands after returning from a smoke break (we cover this in the handwashing, smoking, and allergen topics in the GMP)
Now If I can find the person who keeps chewing tobacco in my warehouse (I assume it's on midnights) I'll be golden...
